Biography

Dr. Md. Shahidur Rahman Chowdhury is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences at Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU), Sylhet, Bangladesh. He is a veterinary clinician, academician, and researcher with extensive experience in infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, zoonoses, and clinical and diagnostic veterinary medicine, with a strong emphasis on the One Health approach. Dr. Chowdhury completed his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Sylhet Agricultural University in 2011, achieving a CGPA of 3.636 out of 4.00. He later earned a Master of Science (MS) in Medicine from the same institution in 2013 with an outstanding CGPA of 3.914 out of 4.00, for which he received a merit-based scholarship from the university. His MS research focused on evaluating the efficacy of anthelmintic drugs against gastrointestinal parasites of native cattle using the Fecal Egg Count Reduction Test (FECRT), reflecting his early engagement with parasitic diseases and drug resistance. Dr. Chowdhury joined Sylhet Agricultural University as a Lecturer in December 2018 and was promoted to Assistant Professor in December 2020. He is actively involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students and contributes to both academic and clinical training. His teaching responsibilities cover a wide range of courses, including Fundamentals of Clinical Medicine, General Medicine, Farm Animal Medicine, Avian Medicine, Pet Animal Medicine, and Zoo and Wild Animal Medicine. Through these courses, he integrates clinical reasoning with contemporary diagnostic and molecular approaches. In addition to teaching and research, Dr. Chowdhury has played an important role in academic administration and clinical service. He served as Director of the Professor Mosleh Uddin Ahmed Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Sylhet Agricultural University from 2020 to 2022, where he contributed to strengthening clinical services, student hands-on training, and hospital management. His clinical experience spans farm animals, poultry, companion animals, and wildlife, providing a strong practical foundation for his academic work. Dr. Chowdhury’s research interests include infectious diseases of domestic and wild animals, zoonotic pathogens, antimicrobial and anthelmintic resistance, parasitic diseases, and clinical, diagnostic, and regenerative medicine. A central theme of his research is understanding the molecular epidemiology, virulence characteristics, biofilm formation, and resistance mechanisms of bacterial pathogens affecting livestock and their implications for animal and public health. Dr. Chowdhury has published extensively in high-impact, peer-reviewed international journals, including Scientific Reports, PLOS ONE, Heliyon, Antibiotics, Veterinary Medicine and Science, Transboundary and Emerging Diseases, Pakistan Veterinary Journal, and PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases. His research addresses critical issues such as methicillin-resistant and extensively drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, ESBL-producing Enterobacterales, multidrug-resistant Salmonella and Escherichia coli, biofilm-associated virulence, subclinical mastitis in buffaloes and cattle, zoonotic tuberculosis, lumpy skin disease, and emerging zoonotic threats. Several of his studies provide important baseline data and novel molecular insights relevant to Bangladesh and other low- and middle-income countries. He is actively engaged in disseminating research findings through national and international conferences, where he has delivered numerous oral and poster presentations. In recognition of his scientific contribution, Dr. Chowdhury received the Best Poster Presentation Award (2025) for his research. Overall, Dr. Md. Shahidur Rahman Chowdhury is a committed academic and researcher whose work integrates clinical veterinary medicine with molecular and epidemiological research. His contributions to antimicrobial resistance, zoonotic disease research, and veterinary education continue to support national and global efforts to improve animal health, food safety, and public health within a One Health framework.
