Biography

Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Maleque was born on 15 October 1968 in a Muslim family of Chuadanga district in Bangladesh. He is the 7th son of Late Kalam Ali Mondal and Mst. Arji Khatun. He passed Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination in 1983 from Nilmoniganj High School, Chuadanga and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination in 1985 from Chuadanga Government College, Chuadanga under the Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education, Jashore. He obtained First Division with Board Merit Scholarship in both the examinations. Then he obtained B.Sc.Ag.(Hons.) degree in 1989 (exam held in 1992) from Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh and Master of Science (MS) in Entomology degree in 1998 from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur. He secured First Class in both B.Sc.Ag.(Hons.) and MS degrees. He obtained PhD degree in Biological and Environmental Science in 2006 from Kobe University, Japan. He started his professional career as a Scientific Officer in the Division of Entomology, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) in January 1995 and promoted to Senior Scientific Officer in May 2005. He completed JSPS long-term (2007-2009) postdoctoral fellowship program from Kobe University, Japan. In October 2013, he was recruited as Associate Professor in the Department of Entomology, Faculty of Agriculture, Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU), Sylhet. In addition to academic activities, he served as Chairman of the Department of Entomology for consecutive two terms, first term since November 2013 to November 2015 and second term since November 2015 to November 2017. He also served as Provost of the Humayun Rashid Chowdhury Hall, SAU, Sylhet since September 2015 to October 2017. At present, he has been serving as Chairman of the Security Committee, SAU, Sylhet since 01 October 2019 to date. His academic and research credentials are excellent. He has published twelve (10) peer-reviewed scientific papers in international journal and thirty five (35) peer-review scientific papers in national journal. Besides, he has published nine (09) books. He has made three (03) oral and two (02) poster presentations in different conferences held in Japan, South Africa and Bangladesh. He served as editor of Training Manual, Conference Papers, Books, etc. He served as reviewer of more than twenty five (25) scientific papers. He severed as regular Radio Talker of fifteen (15) agricultural topics during 1995 to 2003. Until now, he has supervised fifteen (15) MS students and has been approved as Supervisor of PhD program. He is excellent in Bengali (as a native speaker), English and good in Japanese languages. He served as Research and Publication Secretary in the Executive Committees of Bangladesh JSPS Alumni Association for two terms, first term since April 2013 to March 2015 and second term since April 2015 to March 2017. He also served as Executive Committee Member of Bangladesh JSPS Alumni Association since April 2017 to March 2019. At present, he has been serving as Social Welfare and Cultural Secretary in the Executive Committee of Bangladesh Entomological Society since March 2019. He was awarded ‘Best PhD Thesis Award’ by The Bangladesh Entomological Society in November 2007. He was also awarded several Japanese Government fellowships viz., JSPS BRIDGE Fellowship, JSPS Long-Term Postdoctoral Fellowship and Monbukagakusho (MEXT) PhD Fellowship. He is proficient in Bengali (native speaker), conversational in Japanese and fair in Arabic. His IIELTS Overall Band Score is 6.0 (Writing = 7.0, Speaking = 6.5, Reading = 5.5, Listening = 5.5). TOEFL score is 217 in computer-based test (Structure/Writing = 25, Reading = 24, Essay rating = 4.5, Listening = 16), which is equivalent to 553 in paper-based test. He is happily married to Mst. Rokeya Khatun and blessed with two sons: Iftekhar Malik and Marzuq Malik.
