Md. Shahidul Islam was born on 15 December 1966 in Naogaon, Bangladesh. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Honours) from Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh in 1988 and secured First Class. He received his master of science and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Horticulture from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur, Bangladesh in 1997 and 2008, respectively. Mr. Islam started his professional career on 5 September 1992 as Scientific Officer under Horticulture Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) and posted at Pahartali Chottagram. He was promoted to Senior Scientific Officer on 31 May 2005 and transferred to Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur. In the year of 2011 he started his teaching profession from 14 September as Associate Professor of Horticulture Department, Sylhet Agricultural University. He was promoted to the rank of Professor in September 2015. While working at BARI and SAU he was directly involved in research activities on vegetable variety and technology development program and able to developed some vegetable varieties and production technologies which are popular to the growers in the country. Moreover, he performed as trainer for both farmers and officers involved in agriculture sector. Besides, he was also involved in research planning, data collecting, statistical analysis and report writing. He also performed as Research Supervisor of several students for their Master of Science degree in Horticulture. As a principal researcher, ten research projects funded from home and abroad had been successfully completed by him. He attended a higher training programme on, “Vegetable production and research” at Asian Regional Centre of AVRDC in Thailand from October 1998 to March, 1999. In 2010 he attended in the training program on “Application of molecular marker for vegetable and legume breeding” at AVRDC-RCSA, ICRISAT Campus, Hyderabad, India. He also took part in a number of seminar, workshop and training programme locally on different aspects of his working area. Furthermore Md. Shahidul Islam, had an opportunity to visit the school of Bioscience, Nottingham University during 25 February to 3 March 2017. During this visit we had a discussion and meeting with UK partners of the collaborative project entitled, “Renewable Energy from Animal Waste: Benefits for Agriculture and Society” funded by the British Council (Bangladesh) Strategic Partnership Grant. He attended an International Conference on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Agriculture held on December 2018 at Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, India and presented a paper on “Production of sweet pepper under protective structures”. He has authored or co-authored 45 journal articles. Further Mr. Islam contributes as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals including International Journal Environmental Research (IJER), Journal of Saudi Society of Agricultural Science (JSSAS), Agriculture and Natural Resources etc. Besides, he is the members of several professional organizations including Bangladesh Society for Horticultural Science, Krisibid Institution etc.
