About the Department of Agricultural Chemistry
The department of Agricultural Chemistry is a important department of Sher-e Bangla Agricultural University. This department is dedicated in teaching Chemistry related to agriculture for both the undergraduate and post graduate students. Four students are going to be awarded Master of Science (Agricultural Chemistry) degree from this department.
There are 8 Faculty members (3 professors, 2 associate professors, 1 assistant professors and 2 Lectures) and 6 staffs in this department.
Objective of the Department:
- To carry out the fundamental and applied research on fertilizer, pesticide and water specially in fertilizer quality, soil fertility, essential plant nutrients, heavy metals, irrigation water quality, arsenic problems, pesticide effect, residual effect, waste recycling etc
- To develop industrial chemistry based technologies for the increased crop production and food quality.
- Development of instrumental methods of analysis.
Vision of the Department:
- Development of salt tolerant variety for coastal area.
- Chemical materials develop to assist in the production of food, feed and fiber include scores of herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and other pesticides, plant growth regulators, fertilizer and animal feed supplements.
- The later include both nutritional supplements and medicinal compounds for the welfare of people.
- Development of laboratory to fulfill modern needs like medicinal compound analysis, natural product analysis, residual effect of pesticide sprayed mainly on vegetables, fruits and cereal crops.
- Collaboration with different organizations those are involved with working fertilizer, pesticide, natural products etc to find out the exact methodology/application in the crops field.
- To suggest the food safety measures and pesticide formulation at farmers levels in deferent locations of Bangladesh.
Research activities:
The department is actively involved in major research as-
- Identification of suitable modern salt tolerant rice cultivars for cultivating in the saline prone southern part of Bangladesh.
- Assessment of ionic toxicity from different irrigation water sources of Bangladesh.
- Effect of insecticide on soil micro-organisms.
- Residual effect of pesticide in vegetables from different locations of Bangladesh.
- Effect of transplanting date on the yield of rice.
